Biography
Anand Jagota is the Robert W. Wieseman 1916 Professor and Founding Chair of Bioengineering, and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.  His research interests are in the mechanics of interfaces ranging from interactions of biological molecules with nanomaterials to biomimetic design of soft solids for applications such as tires.  AJ received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (India), and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University (in 1988).  He worked as a research scientist at the DuPont Company from 1988 to 2004 on a variety of materials problems including processing of ceramics, design of laminated glass, biomimetic materials, and biological molecules for nanomaterial processing.

Ongoing work in his group is on (a) biomimetic meso-structure design of soft materials for enhanced and controllable surface mechanical properties such as friction, adhesion, and contact compliance, (b) application of machine learning techniques to discover special DNA sequences for binding to single wall carbon nanotubes, (c) biomechanics of viral entry into cells, (d) surface stress and surface constitutive properties of soft solids.

His interest within the NHI program is to focus on difficult problems in predictive biomaterials design using machine learning techniques as well as their use to develop a new paradigm for sensing and diagnostics in which multiple selected optical sensing elements simultaneously perceive in ensemble a host of analytes.
Research Interests
  • Hybrids of DNA and Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes
  • Adhesion and Friction of Soft Materials
  • Surface Stress of Soft Solids
